Movie Review: "The Happytime Murders"

If you're craving a movie with dirty-talking puppets, "The Happytime Murders" might be just what you're looking for. Directed by Brian Henson, the son of Jim and Jane Henson, this film features Muppet-style characters who smoke, curse, and have sex—all in the name of comedy.

Plot Overview

The movie is set in a world where puppets, known as "fluff," live alongside humans, called "meatbags." Puppets are entertainers but face distrust from humans. This concept is somewhat similar to the setup in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," but it doesn't work as smoothly here.

Movie Review The Happytime Murders

The story follows puppet P.I. Phil (voiced by Bill Barretta) who gets a case from a femme fatale puppet named Sandra. He discovers that members of a once-famous puppet TV show, "The Happytime Gang," are being murdered. Phil, a former cop who lost the force's trust, teams up with his human ex-partner Connie (Melissa McCarthy), a bitter cop with a sugar addiction (sugar being like heroin for puppets).

Comedy and Performances

The movie aims to shock with outrageous puppet behavior. Expect foul language, pubic hair, and even puppet ejaculation. While this might sound funny, the audience at my screening didn't laugh much. Surprisingly, the human interactions, especially between McCarthy and Maya Rudolph (playing Phil's secretary), were more amusing.

The Atmosphere

"The Happytime Murders" has a lively spirit, thanks to its enthusiastic cast, which includes Elizabeth Banks, Joel McHale, and puppeteer Kevin Clash (known for handling Elmo). If you enjoy the comedic style of Melissa McCarthy and her friends, you might find the movie entertaining.

Final Thoughts

"The Happytime Murders" is a unique comedy with its share of wild puppet antics. However, it may not be for everyone. It's definitely not for kids, so leave them at home. If you're open to its quirky humor, you might get a kick out of it.

Availability

"The Happytime Murders" is currently available for viewing. If you're in the mood for something different, give it a try—but remember, it's an adults-only comedy.
