Warning 2 (2024) movie review

The Punjabi-language film "Warning 2" (2024) continues the story from its predecessor "Warning" (2021), diving deeper into the world of revenge and action. Directed by Amar Hundal, known for his work on "Warning" and "Babbar" (2022), "Warning 2" showcases his signature style with slow-motion shots, stylized action sequences, and a gritty screenplay.

The plot picks up with Geja (played by Gippy Grewal) in prison alongside Pamma (played by Prince Kanwaljit Singh). Geja, the dominant figure among the inmates, attracts attention with his tales of revenge and violent past. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Geja's thirst for vengeance stems from the murder of his family, driving him into a life of crime.

Warning 2 (2024) movie review

When the prisoners are transferred, both inside and outside forces see an opportunity to settle scores. However, the sheer number of characters—Seeti, Shinda, Gela, Bhola, Keepa, Rana, Jagga, Pamma, Shera, among others—makes the narrative complex and hard to follow. Despite the buildup around certain characters, some, like the one reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter, fail to make a significant impact due to the film's convoluted screenplay.

In essence, "Warning 2" is driven by the theme of revenge, but its overcrowded cast and tangled storyline detract from its potential impact, resulting in a somewhat disjointed viewing experience.

In "Warning 2," besides the usual array of tough guys, there's Rahul Dev (played by Ranjit Singh), a rogue cop who's a bit of a gangster himself. He's known for drinking on duty, casually using "encounter" to describe killing criminals, and enjoying poetry as a hobby. His history with Geja adds an extra layer of tension, leading to a dramatic showdown.

Director Amar Hundal seems more focused on flashy action scenes than on the story itself. The movie is filled with slow-motion shots set to rock music, sometimes feeling out of place. There's even a scene where a character jokes about the unnecessary slow-motion introduction of a clumsy police officer, highlighting the film's self-awareness.

Amidst the violence, Pamma stands out with his wit and cunning. His interactions with Geja are highlights of the film, thanks to Prince Kanwaljit Singh's excellent performance. However, their relationship feels underdeveloped, hinting at a sequel that never fully materializes.

Gippy Grewal's character adds intrigue with his silent demeanor, though his backstory remains a mystery. Some actors, like Raj Singh Jhinjar, are underused, while others, like Raghveer Boli as Seeti and Rahul Dev as the daring cop, deliver strong performances.

Originally planned as a web series, "Warning 2" struggles to adapt its episodic format to a cohesive film. The result is a disjointed narrative overloaded with action but lacking depth. Overall, it feels more like a series of disconnected episodes than a unified story.

"Warning 2" stars Gippy Grewal, Jasmin Bhasin, Prince Kanwaljit Singh, Rahul Dev, Raghveer Boli, and Dheeraj Kumar. It's directed by Amar Hundal. Critics have given the movie a rating of 3 stars.
