The best movie takes inspiration from a significant 2016 decision allowing women to join combat roles in the Indian Air Force. Tejas Gill, played by Kangana Ranaut, is the main character challenging gender norms to become a fighter pilot and serve her country. Eager to prove herself, Tejas convinces her superiors to let her and her co-pilot, Afia (Anshul Chauhan), embark on a mission to rescue a hostage.
The film showcases Tejas's courage, love for the country, and the suspense around whether she will succeed in her mission. It's a refreshing change to see two women in action, breaking away from traditional roles. Their intelligence and bravery are their strongest assets, and watching them in action is convincing.
However, the movie has some drawbacks. The portrayal of Tejas's daring actions, like conflicts with a male pilot, beating up a goon, and facing attacks from Aboriginal tribals, feels forced and exaggerated. The narrative also becomes challenging to follow as it jumps between past and present timelines. The story lacks cohesion, and some sequences feel abrupt.
Despite these flaws, the movie picks up excitement during the main rescue operation, offering intense action scenes. Yet, a parallel plot about an impending terrorist attack can be distracting. Overall, while the film has its ups and downs, it provides an engaging experience for those who enjoy thrilling action stories.
The movie's visuals, captured by Director of Photography Hari K Vedantam, are stunning, showcasing airstrikes, flights, and fight scenes in the deserts. The action scenes, skillfully executed by Kangana Ranaut, who plays the lead, are a strong point. She convincingly portrays a fighter pilot, effortlessly handling both action and emotional scenes. Anshul Chauhan, playing her loud but supportive co-pilot, is also impressive.
The music by Shashwat Sachdev, especially songs like Jaan Da, sung by Arijit Singh, the lively Ranjhana, and the victory anthem Aag Udi, adds to the film's appeal.
For fans of patriotic movies and defense dramas, Tejas might be worth a watch. However, the movie could have been more impactful with a better storyline and a tighter screenplay.
