PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie (2023) Comedy Movie Review

The "Paw Patrol" TV show is all about making kids connect with the characters and convincing parents to buy a bunch of related merchandise. It's good at building excitement and then giving a reassuring laugh or a satisfying rescue moment. The characters, like the Smurfs or Disney's Seven Dwarfs, have simple personalities that are easy for kids to relate to, and they often come with catchy catchphrases.

The stories in "Paw Patrol" are empowering, with young characters using their courage and cool technology to save the day. There are positive lessons about confidence and teamwork, a funny villain, and even some impressive guest stars like Kristen Bell, James Marsden, Lil Rel Howery, Kim Kardashian, and her kids.

In the world of "Paw Patrol," a group of superhero puppies led by a 10-year-old boy named Ryder take on every rescue mission in Adventure City. They play the roles of the police, fire department, and coast guard, covering air, land, and water rescues. Kids can relate to Ryder as a child, but also imagine themselves in his role as a kind and capable leader. Ryder is independent, tech-savvy, and always emphasizes the importance of teamwork.

The character Skye, voiced by Mckenna Grace, takes center stage in this movie. She's brave, resilient, and dedicated, but she struggles with feelings of inadequacy from being the runt of her litter. Ryder rescued her and made her part of the group, but she worries about not growing as big as the other pups.

Taraji P. Henson plays the villain, Victoria Vance, who insists she's not a mad scientist but does some pretty sci-fi stuff like using magnetism to move meteors. These meteors have a mysterious power source that becomes a crucial part of the story. Fans of the Paw Patrol nemesis, Humdinger, will be happy to see him making an appearance as Victoria's cell-mate, helping her escape from jail.

The Paw Patrol pups are known for using planes, boats, vehicles, and a cool command center to explore every corner of Adventure City. Even when their headquarters gets destroyed, it magically reappears. But after over 200 episodes and another movie, it seems like they could use some fresh ideas. So, why not give them superpowers? A bunch of mysterious meteors show up, each with a crystal that enhances the special abilities of the pups. This twist could spark some interesting family conversations. Just a heads up, though, this movie is a bit more intense than the earlier G-rated one, earning a PG rating for some peril and "cartoon violence." Nobody gets hurt, but there's a whole lot of property getting smashed.

Right from the beginning, a character points out, "They're cute little puppies who drive around in cars. I know that sounds weird, but just go with it." Is this movie a must-see feature film? Probably not. Will parents enjoy it? Maybe if they doze off through most of it, waking up only for the guest star voices and passing popcorn to their happy kids. Is watching this movie basically supporting a way for companies to sell more stuff? Yep. But is it a good way to introduce kids to the excitement of seeing their favorite stories on a big screen in a dark room? Absolutely.
