Monkey Man (2024) Movie Review

Dev Patel, the actor known for his Oscar-nominated performances, is stepping into the director's chair for the first time with his upcoming film, "Monkey Man." The action-packed revenge story is set to hit theaters on April 5, courtesy of Universal Pictures, with Jordan Peele producing through his Monkeypaw Productions.

In the film, Patel takes on the role of Kid, an anonymous young man struggling to make ends meet in an underground fight club. Night after night, he wears a gorilla mask and endures brutal beatings from more popular fighters for cash. Inspired by the Hindu deity Hanuman, the movie explores Kid's journey of suppressed rage and revenge.

The story unfolds as Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the city's sinister elite. Fueled by childhood trauma, his mysteriously scarred hands unleashed a campaign of explosive retribution against those who took everything from him.

The recently released trailer offers a glimpse into the intense action reminiscent of films like "John Wick." Patel's character embarks on a quest for revenge, engaging in fierce battles involving shootings, stabbings, and brutal confrontations. One particularly intense moment shows him ruthlessly stabbing a man through the neck while gripping a knife between his teeth.

Dev Patel not only stars in "Monkey Man" but also directs the film based on his original story and screenplay, co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. Originally set for Netflix, the movie is now making its way to theaters through Monkeypaw's film deal with Universal.

The cast includes notable names such as Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, Sikandar Kher, and Makarand Deshpande.

The film's producers include Patel, Peele, and a team of industry professionals, with Universal Pictures presenting it as a Bron Studios production. "Monkey Man" promises a thrilling cinematic experience, blending action, revenge, and a touch of mythology.
