Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend (2022) Movie Review

"Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend" tells the story of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the guy who started Lamborghini cars. It traces his life from fixing machines during World War II to creating a tractor company using borrowed money. What triggered him to make the 'most beautiful car' was a disagreement with Enzo Ferrari."

Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend

Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend misses the mark as a movie. Despite having talented actors like Gabriel Byrne and Mira Sorvino, the film falls short due to underdeveloped characters and a lackluster story and screenplay. The director fails to capture the main character's passion and drive effectively. The movie takes shortcuts, which is odd for a period film, and barely scratches the surface of Ferruccio's life. If only it had delved deeper, it could have been so much better. It's hard to imagine a biographical movie wrapped up in just ninety minutes.

The story starts in post-war Italy, where Ferruccio, a mechanic in World War II, returns home, gets married, and starts a tractor factory with borrowed money. A disagreement with his friend Matteo leads to their separation, and Ferruccio becomes obsessed with creating outstanding tractors and, later, the 'most beautiful car' after a spat with Enzo Ferrari. The film explores his determination to showcase the car at the Geneva Auto Show.

Despite having all the elements for an exciting film, 'Lamborghini' feels wooden and uninspiring. The captivating idea of a poor mechanic overcoming odds to create the best car is lost in bad writing. It's a soulless, dull movie that leaves you feeling disappointed. The rivalry between Ferruccio Lamborghini and Enzo Ferrari, a significant aspect, is poorly executed. Frank Grillo, a skilled actor, falls short of expectations, and the film underplays his character's depth. Even with Gabriel Byrne in the cast, his role is minimal, and the director fails to make the most of such talent.

Comparisons with 'Ford vs. Ferrari' are inevitable, and 'Lamborghini' doesn't measure up. The former is a much better movie in terms of both subject and execution. Despite being set in Italy with Italian characters, the main language being English feels inauthentic. Lamborghini enthusiasts are likely to be let down by this film.
