the killer (2023) Movie Review

The Killer: David Fincher's films are often described as emotionally distant, and I had reservations about his adaptation of the graphic novel "The Killer." As expected, this gloomy piece of 21st-century existentialism follows an assassin methodically carrying out one hit after another.

Despite its bleak tone, Fincher showcases his masterful craftsmanship in the film, thanks to the contributions of cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, production designer Donald Graham Burt, and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker is structured into chapters, each named after the victim and location of the hired assassin's kills across places like Paris and New Orleans. [The Killer]

However, the film's repetitive rhythm in each chapter, culminating in someone's death, becomes monotonous without adding much substance. Michael Fassbender, playing the emotionless assassin, narrates the film in a robotic voice reminiscent of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original Terminator. While some victims, like Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, and Arliss Howard, manage to inject more depth into their characters, it isn't sufficient to compensate for the overall emptiness of "The Killer," leaving the movie feeling lifeless and uninspiring.
